His paternal grandparents were Issac Critton and Elizabeth Mann; his maternal grandparents were Enoch Blackwell Drake and Rachel Hendrickson. He had nine brothers and six sisters, named Cary Alexander, Charles Stanfort, James, Johnnie, Joseph Washburn, Robert B., William Washburn, Isaac Drake, Enoch Blackwell, America Ellen, Azuba Lucinda, Catherine, Eura, Mary Molly and Rebecca Jane.
