Enoch (biblical figure), in the Old Testament, according to Genesis 4:17-18, the son of Cain and father of Irad. According to Genesis 5:18-21 and subsequent references, Enoch was the son of Jared and father of Methuselah.
The patriarchal figure of Enoch probably originated in a solar myth and later assumed considerable importance in Jewish thought. Prominent among the traditional legends associated with Enoch in his “translation,” that is, his being taken directly into heaven without evidencing death. This tradition is based on Genesis 5:24: “Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” The verse influenced the development of views on immortality in the Old Testament. Enoch is mentioned in this same context in the New Testament (Hebrews 11:5).
