Manasseh (king) (reigned 687?-642?bc), Judean king. In the Old Testament he is depicted as being extremely wicked (see 2 Kings 21: 1-18). On being taken as a prisoner to Babylon, however, he repented, prayed to God for forgiveness, and was restored to his throne (see 2 Chronicles 33: 11-13, 18-19). Tradition ascribes to him the short psalmlike Prayer of Manasseh, which is included with other apocryphal material in some manuscripts of the Old Testament. The work consists of an invocation to God, a personal confession of sin, and a plea for God's forgiveness.
