John was born on May 2nd, 1717 in Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts. John's father was Josiah Gifford and his mother is Mercy Chadwick. His paternal grandparents were John Gifford and Eleshua Crowe or Crowell. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Christopher, Benjamin, Samuel, Abigail, Rhode and Hannah. He died at the age of 68 in 1785 in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massechusetts.-
