Of Armenian descent, John Tzimisces was a successful general under Emperor Nicephorus Phocas and came to the throne by assassinating Nicephorus. He defeated the Russians (970-971), began the conquest of Bulgaria, campaigned against the Muslims in Mesopotamia and Syria (972-975), and improved Byzantine relations with the West by arranging the marriage (972) of the Holy Roman emperor Otto II to the Byzantine princess Theophano
