In 1172 Will i am de Tr esg ot ow ed the serviceof one and a h a l f
knights
in
the Cotentin. He was suc c eeded by Robert d e Tre sgoz, proba bly h is
son,
wh o was bailiff of the Co te nti n in 1 195 and under Jo hn, and who held
lands in many Englis h c ou nt ies .  Robert ad hered to John and los t
his
lands in N or mandy; and in the R e gis ters of Philip Augustus t here i s
t
he
entry "Fe odum de Tresgoz quod d ominu s rex tenet p er esca etam debet
servicium unius mi li tis et dimidium." By as cha rter date d at Pa ris in
Nov , 1218 Philip Augustu s gave to Mi les de Levi s the usufruct of th e
land whic h R obert de Trego ts ha d possessed a t Tregots , F avarches, a
nd
St-Rompha ire .  F avarches is the ne xt commune to Tr oisgo ts, and
St-Ro mph
aire is c lose by.  The re was a castle at Tr o isgots, de scr ib ed by
G erville.

ROBERT DE TRE GOZ was probably t h e son of Wi lliam DE T REG O Z (who
owed
the
s ervice of 1 u knights i n the C otenti n in 11 72 ), and m ay also have
been
the m an of th at name who wa s a parti san of the you ng K ing Henry

son of He nr y I I ) in 1173 and at tes ted his chartersin 11 75. [Complet

Note: CP do es not indicate any parents for W illiam, fathe r o f Robert

Tregoz of Ewyas. However the line by Dav e U tzin ger indicates t hat
William was the son of "Le Sire de T regoz" who fo ugh t at the Battle of
Has ti ngs.  Clearly Rob er t, be ing born around 1169 or befo re , would
not
be the gran d sonof a ma n bor n be fore 1047 (in orde r to fight in 1066)
