In 1131/2 G ilbert ac coun ted for the plea s of Miles of Gl ouc ester and
of
Payn fitzjohn, whose daugh ter Cecily was t o ma rry Roger, the eldest son
and heir of Miles, i n o r befor e M ay 1138 (Pi pe Roll). In the ret urn
of
1166, Gi lbert appear s a s one of the knights of M arga ret de Bohun,
e v entual heir ess of Miles, enf eoffe d by her father. He h eld ha lf a
knigh
t' s fee, which fro m subsequen t evidence was at Culke rton. H e was also
returne d for one-third of a fee un der the Arch bi shop of York a nd one

under t he Bishop of Worce ster ( RBE ). When Ha meli n w as abbot of St.
Peter 's, Glou cester (1148- 79) Gi lb ert confirmed a grant t o St.
Pet er's
of land in Bro oktho rpe and La Rugge ( in Standish) ( CPG). T hese
refer ence
s to Gilbert m aybe tak en, as in th e Colle ge of Arms pedigr ee, to r

to two generatio ns of the same name.
