Humphrey was born in 1208 in Hungerford, Essex, England. Humphrey's father was Henry De Bohun and his mother was Maud De Mandeville. His paternal grandparents were Humphrey IV De Bohun and Margaret De Huntingdon; his maternal grandparents were Geoffrey Fitzpiers and Beatrice De Say. He was an only child.
