app arently up on Chester Waters (Chesters of Chi chele y , vol. i, pp.
25 3-55), w ho cite s the Scales Peerage Ca se, w hic h, however , p
rovides
no
surna me. T her e a re numerous refe rences to Isabe l under th at name,
but
nothing ha s be en prin ted which affords any proof of her parenta ge.
From
a note l eft by th e late M iss Ethel Stokes, however , i t appears tha t
in
the course of the cla im for th e right to the arms of B urn ell (Lovell
v.
Morley, P.R.O., G. D. 26/ 69) in 139 6 or 13 97, it was stated in evidence
t hat "in the church o f Aus t i n Friars', London, there w as a chasuble
with
thes e arms, fo r mer ly in the nunnery of Bl akeberg h, an d the ornament
o
f
a ves tment with t he same, for m erly in thechur ch of M i ddl eton,
which
wer e give n to the f riars by a Dam e de Scales,w ho wa s daug hter of a
Sieur de Bu rnel l." Anoth er deponent ca ll ed her Isabe l, said tha t s
he
died about 56 years p revious ly, and that t he v estment lay on the to mb
o f
the said Dame , whi ch was in the said mona ster y, on her anniversar y.
