His paternal grandparents were Jan Martense VAN ALSTYNE and Dirckje HARMENSE; his maternal grandfather was Teuwis (Matthew) Abrahamson VAN DEURSEN and his maternal grandmother is Helena ROBBERTS. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Johannes, Mattheus, Sander, Abraham, Isaac, Marten, Magdalena, Dirckje and Cathryntje Catryntje. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
