Her paternal grandparents were Frances Thorton STROTHER and Susannah DABNEY; her maternal grandfather was Samuel Bayly and her maternal grandmother is Elizabeth Baker. She had five brothers and three sisters, named William Dabney, William Dabney, John, Joseph, David, Susannah, Susannah and Frances. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
