Mary was born about 1552 in Of, Gowrie, Perthshire, Scotland.  Mary's father was William RUTHVEN and her mother was Dorothea STEWART. She had seven brothers and eight sisters, named James, John, Patrick, William, William, Patrick, Alexander, Sophia, Lilias, Dorothea, Jean, Elizabeth (Isabel), Beatrix, Barbara and Margaret.
