His paternal grandparents are William MAINWARING and Elizabeth LEYCESTER; his maternal grandfather was Hugh De VENABLES and his maternal grandmother is Margery COTTON. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Randle, Elizabeth, Margery, Cecily, Joan, Ellen and Agnes. He was the oldest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Margery.
