His paternal grandfather was Edward De KEITH and his paternal grandmother is Isabella De SYNTON; his maternal grandfather was Alexander Fraser and his maternal grandmother is Mary Bruce. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Alexander, Robert, John, Christian, Muriella, Margaret, Elizabeth, Christian and Janet. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
