Mathew Ap was born about 1368 in Castell Kibwr Brynwith, Glamorgan, Wales. Mathew Ap's father is Ieuan Ap GRUFFUDD and his mother is Crisli Verch GAWDYN. His paternal grandparents are Gruffudd "Gethin" Ap MADOG and Joan Verch RHUN. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Madog Ap, Evan Ap, Llewelyn Ap, Owen Ap, Rhys Ap, Elen Verch and Maud Verch.
