John was born in 1675 in South Farnam Parish, Essex Co., Va.  John's father was John Gatewood and his mother was Amy Mc Graw. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Frances and Amy.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 75 on February 19th, 1750 in Essex Co., Va.
