William was born about 1392 in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. William's father was John Forbes and his mother was Margaret Kennedy. His paternal grandfather was John Forbes; his maternal grandfather was John Kennedy and his maternal grandmother is Mary Montgomerie. He had three brothers named Alistair, Alexander and John. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died in Arbroath, Scotland.-
