And at least the a most of the Swedish Nobility also has family connections to this exclusive European family circle. Here in Sweden King Gustav I (1495/6-1521/3-1560) has a special status. He was a leader of a war, that liberated Sweden from Danish rule, and since he got control of the Royal Palace in Stockholm in 1521, Stockholm has never been besieged. Gustav I is generally considered as founder of the Swedish state, since he strengthened the power of the state and centralized it to Stockholm. He also transformed the Swedish Crown to hereditary status. Gustav Eriksson (Vasa), later Gustav I, was born at Lindholmen on the 12th of May, 1495 or 1496, as son of Councillor of the Realm Erik Johansson (Vasa) and his wife Cecilia Månsdotter (Eka). He did not belong to a Royal House, but to an ancient Swedish noble family, by modern genealogists called Vasa, due to the family's arms. Despite not being born royal, Gustav succeeded in not only to marry (in his first marriage) Katharine, daughter of Magnus, Duke of Sachsen-Lauenburg and his wife Katharine of Braunschweig-Wolffenbüttel, he also succeed in marrying all his daughters to sons of European royalty. Today Gustav I's descendants are found not only among Swedish nobility and even many commoners, but also among all present-day hereditary European Heads of States. None of them descends from Gustav's marriage to Katherine of Sachen-Lauenburg, though, because this marriage resulted only in Gustav's first born son Erik (XIV), who has no royal desendants.
