Mott was born in 1678 in Richmond, , Virginia. Mott's father was Alexander DONIPHAN and his mother was Margaret MOTT. His maternal grandparents were George MOTT and Elizabeth UNKNOWN. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Alexander, Elizabeth, Margaret, Anne and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the seven children.
