Richard was born in 1722 in Of, Northumberland, Virginia. Richard's father was Matthias CHITWOOD (MATTHIS) and his mother is Mary KEY. His paternal grandfather is Thomas CHETWOOD; his maternal grandparents are Richard KEY and Mary Cartwright. He had six brothers and a sister, named Richard Chetwood, Matthias .Jr., John, James, William, John and Eliner. He was the youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 63 in 1785 in , Rutherford, North Carolina.General Notes
