WILLIAM was born on January 24th, 1560 in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England. WILLIAM's father was William Brewster and his mother was Mary Smythe. Elder WILLIAM BREWSTER was the unoffical pastor of the Pilgrims whoemigrated from the Netherlands to Massachusetts Colony aboard the 'MAYFLOWER' in 1620. He was not an ordained minister as such, but was theirlay minister, and as such he was able to preach and teach.
NOTE: The Pilgrims, as they were called, were NOT PURITANS - they wereSEPARATISTS from the Church of England, in other words they believed thattrue believers should separate from the Church of England completely inorder to serve God. They believed that the Church of England was corrupt,and essentially no different from the Roman Church, which the reformersyears before had abandoned for the same reason. This is one of the mainreasons why King James persecuted them severely, and stated that he would"harry them out of the land". Out of fear for their lives and the livesof their children, most of them fled to the Netherlands, where they werereceived kindly, as the Dutch were tolerant to a variety of religiousviews.
After a few years however, they observed that their children werebecoming "too Dutch", and feared they would abandon their Englishheritage. Therefore they decided to find a new place to live, and decidedto emigrate to the new British colonies in America.
As a matter of interest, the Pilgrims rejected the new KING JAMES VERSIONof the Bible (published 1611), which was authorized by a king who wasintent on persecuting (and prosecuting) them because they wished to beable to serve God according to the dictates of their own consciences andto their own belief system. They preferred instead the GENEVA BIBLE. Itis not generally known, but James I was at least bisexual, and committedvarious acts that should have had him excommunicated from the Church ofEngland - problem was, HE was the HEAD OF THE CHURCH!!
