His paternal grandparents were Thomas BINGHAM and Hannah BACKUS; his maternal grandparents were Samuel POST and Ruth LATHROP. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Stephen, Jeremiah, Calvin, Ruth, Mary, Eunice, Esther, Lois and Lucretia. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
