1643 represented county of Edinburgh in Estates of parliament,
appointed speaker to the barons;
1646 became lord advocate, proclaiming Charles II king on Feb.
5, 1649
Mar. 10, 1649 appointed lord-clerk-register
after Battle of Dunbar, in 1650, lived in retirement;
accepted office under Cromwell and in July 1657, reappointed
lord-clerk-register
escaped to France when Cromwell resigned; outlawed on Oct. 10,
1660; condemned to death on May 15, 1661; brought back to be
prisoner in Tower in England, then in Edinburgh
hanged at the Cross without trial, July 22, 1663
