Name Prefix:<NPFX> Baron
The first son of of Robert Turstain, was Baron of Briquebec in 943, and
his grandson William, Baron of Briquebec, was the first to take the name
of Bertrand, from whom descended th e Russell family of England, Dukes of
Bedford.
In the rebellion of Rioulf of St. Savour angainst Duke William Longsword,
in 933, Baron of Briquebec is me tioned by Wace as one of the three Barons
who alone remained faithful to the Duke, by rendering him military
service at the seige of Rouen; and on the ass issination of that Prince he
was appointed by the barons of Normandy and Bret agny one of the three
guardians to his young son, the Duke Robert, at a crisi s which required a
rare union of courage , firmness and discretion, and fulfi lled his trust
during that long and troubling minority with the reputation to himself
and and advantage to his country. It was in the time of Anslech that the
Castle of Briquebec was first erected, now one of the most beautiful and
picturesque ruins in La Manche.
