Matilda the Empress, Queen of England -
She was designated Henry's heir, and on his death (1135), Stephen siezed the thorne and Matilda invaded England (1139) inuaguarating a period of inconclusive civil war. She and he second husband (Geoffrey) captured Normandy and in 1152 the Treaty of Wallingford recognised Henry II as Stephen's heir.
Burke says he was betrothed in her eight years (1119) to Henry. ???

was the daughter of Henry I . of England, and was married, in 1110, to the Emperor Henry V. On his death, in 1127, she married Geoffrey Plantagenet, Earl of Anjou, by whom she had a son, afterwards Henry II. <kingh.html>, King of England. She was nominated in 1135 successor to the English throne by her father; but in her absence Stephen <kingiops.html> usurped the title. Arriving in England with a large army in 1139, she defeated Stephen, and was acknowledged queen in a synod held in 1141. Stephen afterwards defeated the Empress, and she was obliged to leave the kingdom. Matilda died in 1165, aged 67.

or Maud She married Emperor Henry V in 1114; he died in 1125, and she made a second marriage to Geoffrey Plantagenet. Her brother's death in 1120 left her as Henry I's sole legitimate heir, and Henry named her as his successor in 1127. Stephen of Blois, Henry's nephew, seized the throne on the king's death in 1135, and his army defeated Matilda's supporters in 1141. She continued her resistance and retired to Normandy in 1148. Her son became Henry II of England, and she remained his adviser and oversaw his continental possesions.
