Walter was born in 1042 in Saer, Normandy.  Walter's father was Hugh De Lacy and his mother was Emma UNKNOWN. He had a brother named Ilbert.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 42 on April 2nd, 1084 in Herefordshire, England.

They had three sons and two daughters, named Roger, Hugh, Walter, Agnes and Emma (Emmaline).
