His paternal grandparents were Edgar UNKNOWN and Elfthryth UNKNOWN; his maternal grandfather was Thored Gunnarsson. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Athelstan, Edgar, Edmund, Edred, Egbert, Edric, Edwig, Godifu, Edith, Wulfhild, Elfgifu and Ethelred. He had two half-brothers named Edward and Alfred.
