Robert was born about 1215 in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England. Robert's father was Adam de Radclyffe and his mother was Alice De Curwen. His paternal grandparents were William de Radclyffe and Cecelia De Montbegon; his maternal grandfather was Adam De Curwen. He had two brothers named William and John.
