Her paternal grandfather was Humphrey Wise; her maternal grandparents were John Tidd and Margaret Greenleaf. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Benjamin, Joseph, Edmund, Benjamin, Joseph, Em, Susanna, Abigail, Ann, Alice and Anne. She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
