Alan I was born about 1048. Alan I's father was Count of Penthievre & Brittany Eudes and his mother was Agnes de Cornouaille. His paternal grandparents were Duke of Brittany Geoffrey and Hawise of Normandy; his maternal grandparents were Alain Canhiart and Judith of Nantes. He had eight brothers named William of, Robert of, Richard of, Geoffrey I, Count of Brittany, Alan II, Bardolf of and Lord of Richmond. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Bardolf.
