Duncan I 'the was born about 1001 in Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan I 'the's father was Crinan Grimus 'The Thane' and his mother was Bethoc (Beatrix). His paternal grandfather was Mormaer of Athol Duncan; his maternal grandparents were Malcolm II MacKenneth and an Irishwoman. He had a brother named Maldred of. He was the older of the two children. He died on August 14th, 1040 in Bothganowan, Elgin. He was buried in Iona, Near Elgin, Scotland.General Notes
Duncan I (1001?-40), king of Scotland (1034-40), grandson of King Malcolm II Mackenneth, whom he succeeded. Before his accession to the Scottish throne he was ruler of the kingdom of Strathclyde. Macbeth, who ruled the neighboring kingdom of Moray and served Duncan as a general, killed him and became king of Scotland. Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth is based on the struggle between the two kings.
