Mary was born in 1590 in Hillmorton, Warwick, England.  Mary's father was Michael Gater and her mother was Elizabeth Isabel Bailey.  Her maternal grandfather was William Bailey. She had six brothers and five sisters, named John, Michael, Richard, Francis, Erasmis, William, Elizabeth, Agnes, Margaret, Judith Elizabeth and Alice.
