Sir John was born about 1350 in Cargill and Stobhall, Scotland. Sir John's father was Sir John Drummond and his mother was Mary Montifex. His paternal grandparents were Sir Malcolm Drummond and daughter de Graham; his maternal grandfather was Sir William Montifex. He was an only child.
They had a son named Sir Walter.
