Burchard was born about 0952. Burchard's father was Margrave of the Nordgau Berthold and his mother was Countess of Walbeck Heilika. His paternal grandparents were Arnulf 'the Bad' and Grafin von Sulichgau Jutte; his maternal grandfather was Count of Walbeck Lothar.
