Dorothea was born about 1733 in Bold, Lancastershire, England. Dorothea's father was Peter Bold and her mother was Anna-Maria Wentworth. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Bold and Elizabeth Norton; her maternal grandfather was Godfrey Wentworth. She had five sisters named Anna Maria, Frances, Mary, Goverilda and Elenor.
