Emma Victoria's father was Henry Allen Shoemaker and her mother was Esther Hunt. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Shoemaker and Elizabeth Elliott. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Anselam W., David, Riley, William H., Robert Theidore, Simon E., Rhoda Ellen, Anna Esther, Florence R. and Sarah Alice. She had a half-brother named Pearly.
Emma Victoria and Charles were married in a religious ceremony in 1881.
