The only record found of Matthew Herryman, other than his probate, was as a witness to the will of Matthew Caipe of Uldate, on 20 November 1566. He was probably a copyhold tenant, holding life tenure of land granted by the lord of the manor of Uldale. At his death the land would be inherited by his heir upon payment of a rent in cash or kind.
The inventory of Matthew's personal estate, appraised bv Mathew Fell, Mathew Emondson[sic], wyllm cokes [sic] and Robert Andee, was valued at 1618s 2d. In addition to household furnishings and clothes, it included 'husbandrye gere & Iron gere & rydynge gere, "sheep, oxen, geese, cows, and "one nagge", and grains such as barley , oats, and straw-suggesting that he was a farmer and stockman and also mined iron ore. A number of creditors and debtors are listed.
Matthew's death occurred probably at a fairly young age, as four of his children were minors when he died. His unsigned will was made on 17 October 1568. The first paragraph, except for name and date, is nearly identical with the beginning of the will of Thomas Shepard. Calling himself" mathew herryma of the p[ar]yshe of uldelle sicke in bodye, but holle off mynde and in good and perfytte remembrance," he requested burial in the church yard of Uldale, and made bequests as follows:
Ite[m] I geve to lenard my sone my rydinge gere and my husbandrye gere And one skepe of hauer [ie-, oats] and one halffe skepe of bege [i.e., barley], and [... ] thes legaces to be deleuered so longe as she [Isabel] beinge my wyffe the Residew off all my goods moueable my dettes payd and my fun'ralle expe[n]cys dyscharged and this my laste wyll trewlye fullffylled I geve and bequisse to esabelle my wyffe and mathew john jamys and margareth my cheldrey[n]e whome I make to be my trew and lawffull executors off all my goods that I have they to dyspose yt as they shalle thinke most mette ffor the healtth of my soule.
The will was proved on 30 March 1569. The endorsement on it shows that only Isabel was appointed executrix because the four children designated as executors were still minors.
The children were most likley born at Uldale. Source: The New England Historical and Genealogical Register
