John was born on December 13th, 1712 in Ainstable, Cumberland, England.  John's father was John Verty and his mother was Dorothy Lowthian.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Vertye and Jane Hewetson.  He was an only child.

‌John and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on November 12th, 1738 in Allendale, Northcumberland, England.  They had two sons named John and Isaac.
