Esther's father was Herman Lafser and her mother was Elizabeth Wagner.  Her paternal grandparents were Wenzel Hlavsa and Louisa Kovajek; her maternal grandfather was Cooney Wagner. She had a brother and four sisters, named Feridnand Arthur, Ann, Hilda, Lillian and Mary.
