Benjamin's father was Manus Burger and his mother was Elizabeth Wheeler.  His paternal grandfather was Govert Burger; his maternal grandparents were Benjamin Dodd Wheeler and Nancy Unknown. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Nicholas, David, Jesse, John, Joseph, Ann and Charity.
