Gilbert was born in 1100 in Tunbridge, Kent, England. Gilbert's father was Gilbert Fitzrichard de Clare and his mother was Adelaide de Clermont. His paternal grandparents were Richard Fitzgilbert de Clare and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de Clermont and Margaret de Roucy. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard Fitzgilbert, Balwin Fitzgilbert, John Fitzgilbert, Hervy, Walter, Rohese, Adeliza and Agnes. He was buried in Tintern Abbey.-
