Richard's father was Richard Swain and his mother was Jane Godfrey.  His paternal grandfather was William Swain; his maternal grandparents were Richard Godfrey and Jane Turner. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named John, Francis, William, Dorothy, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann and Martha.
