Alfonso IX of Castile and was born on August 15th, 1171 in Zamora, Leon, Spain.  Alfonso IX of Castile and's father was Fernando of Leon and his mother was Urraca of Leon.  His paternal grandparents were Alfonso VII of Castile King of Castile and Berengaria of Barcelona; his maternal grandparents were I Alfonso and Matilda of Savoy.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 59 on September 24th, 1230 in Villaneuva, De Sarria, Lugo, Spain.
