Ethelred Abernathy Earl of Fife 
Ethelred Abernathy Earl of was born in 1061. Ethelred Abernathy Earl of's father was Malcolm III King of Scotland and his mother was Margaret "Atheling" Queen of Scotland. His paternal grandparents were Duncan I King of Scotland and Sibyl Fitzsiward; his maternal grandparents were Edward "Atheling" Prince of England and Agatha of Brunswick. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Edward Prince of, Edmund Prince of, Duncan II King of, Edgar King of, Alexander I King of, David I The Saint King of, Matilda Princess of and Mary Princess of. Ethelred or Aethelred was also Abbot of DunkeldIn and this title carriedthe ownership of the lands belonging to the Church but involved noecclesiastical functions. In the twelfth century the Abernethy familyemerges as the Lay Abbots of the Culdee Irish Christian Monastery ofAbernethy. Its members exercised great territorial rights, and presentlyassumed the title of Lords of Abernethy. "He furthermore says that, "Inthe last chapter we have seen that the Lord of Abernethy, the Earl ofFife, and the Priest of Wadele were the three supreme judges inconnection with the law of Clan Macduff; some close blood connectionseems to have existed between the Lord of Abernethy and the Earl of Fife,for the armorial bearings of the two families support the relationship".Ethelred, the first Earl of Fife and the first known to have adopted thesurname "Abernethy", was succeeded by his son, Sir Alexander, who in turnwas succeeded by his son, Sir Hugh. The title as Earl of Fife devolvedupon his eldest son, Duncan.
