Theobold was born in 1200 in Arklow, Wicklow, Ire. and his baptism took place in 1206. Theobold's father was Theobold fitz Walter Boteler and his mother was Maud Vavasour. His paternal grandparents were Hervey II Walter and Matilda Valoines; his maternal grandparents were Lord Robert Vavasour and Juliana Ros. He was an only child.
