Gwerystan was born in 0950 in Powysland, Wales.  Gwerystan's father was Lord Gwaithfoed ap Gwrhydyr and his mother was Morfydd Verch Ynyr Ddu.  His paternal grandfather was Gwrhydyr ap Caradoc; his maternal grandparents were King Ynyr Ddu and Joyce deBaladon.  He was an only child.
