General Notes

The Salmon Records lists the death of an infant to John Sweezey on 24 Aug 1728 and another infant 25 Aug 1728. I assume twins were born and died (maybe triplets and one lived??). I do not know which John Sweezey they are talking about. This John Sweezey is the only one in my database that would fit the time and place, even though he would have been about 50-60 years old, unless my approximate birth date for John is off. There is another problem with this person and children: according to a list of inhabitants of Southold in 1698, there is a listing for John, his wife Mary, son John, Jr., and a Susana, Mary, Jr., Joshua and Phebe Sweezey. According to B.F. Swasey, these are the children of John Jr. (b. Abt 1680). There is no way these 4 people can be John, Jr.'s children and be living in 1698, since John, Jr. didn't marry Sarah Ramsey until 1707. I guess it is possible that John Jr. was married previously, and had 4 children before 1698, but then my estimate must be off on approximate DOB of 1680. It would seem more likely that these four people are the brothers and sisters of John, Jr. I am going to change the birth dates on all these children to match the 1698 census. I will look for further evidence that John was married previously.

I have a source that says this John Sweezey had an additional son named Caleb born about 1720, and that his family started the Pennsylvania Sweesey's. I just found another source that claims that the children that I show for John and Sarah (Susanna, Mary, Joshua and Phebe) are really John's siblings and not his children. Based upon this information, and the census of 1698, plus the dates for these children do not fit the marriage date, I am going to assume that B.F. Swasey History is incorrect and I will show these children as brothers and sisters of this John.

This John Sweezey probably had more children then just Dorothy, but I have not found any documentation that shows any other children.

Another thought on this family. I notice that John's sister (?) Susannah was married in 1724/1725. This would imply that she was born around 1700, and since she is listed in the 1698 census, she could have been born as late as 1697, and could theoretically be a daughter of this John, but of course, by a different wife
