Ira Lester's father was Alonzo Smith and his mother was Maudie Stone.  His paternal grandparents were John B. Smith and Elizabeth Bennett; his maternal grandparents were James Madison Stone and Cacupsadella (Corsedella) Godwin. He had two sisters named Frieda Mae and Leatrice Bell.

They had a daughter named Living.
