Velma's father was Lee Alexander Brown and her mother was Eva Linona Stone.  Her maternal grandparents were George Washington Stone and Elizabeth A. Bowman. She had five brothers and a sister, named Luther, Milford Ernest, Roy, Troy Lee, Willie and Violet.
