Robert de was born in 0920 in Vermandois,Normandy,France and his baptism took place in France - Ancient Iatinum - on the Marne.1 Robert de's father was Herbert II Count of Vermandois and his mother was Hildebrante (Liegaude) of Neustria. His paternal grandparents were Herbert I Count of Vermandois and Beatrice de Morvois; his maternal grandparents were Robert I King of Franks and Béatrice de Vermandois. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Eudes Count of, Albert I "The Pious" of, Robert of, Hugh Archbishop of, Renaud, Herbert of , Count of Meaux, Sproata (Adela) of, Béatrice de, Kunigunde de, Luitgarde de, Adele (Alice) (Alix) and Adela de.
